Autism, ADHD & Executive Function

Understanding neurodevelopmental differences and everyday life

Autistic children and young people, and those with ADHD or executive functioning difficulties, often experience the world in ways that can feel overwhelming, exhausting or difficult to manage. Everyday demands such as school, transitions, organisation, sensory environments, emotional regulation, social interaction and participation can require enormous amounts of energy and effort.

Many children work hard to cope, adapt or mask their difficulties throughout the day, only to become emotionally overwhelmed, exhausted or dysregulated once they are home and feel safe enough to release that stress.

At Activate OT Scotland, we provide neurodiversity-affirming Occupational Therapy assessment and support for children and young people experiencing difficulties with regulation, participation, sensory processing, executive functioning and everyday life.

Our approach focuses on understanding each child’s unique neurodevelopmental profile, strengths and challenges rather than viewing difficulties as isolated behaviours or deficits.

Children and young people may:

  • become overwhelmed by everyday demands

  • struggle with emotional regulation or impulsivity

  • mask difficulties at school and collapse at home

  • find transitions and unpredictability difficult

  • struggle with organisation, planning or task completion

  • become exhausted by social or sensory demands

  • avoid tasks that feel overwhelming or unsafe

  • experience shutdowns, meltdowns or burnout

  • struggle to initiate or sustain everyday activities

  • appear anxious, distracted, oppositional or emotionally dysregulated when overwhelmed

  • experience school distress or participation difficulties

Some children may appear highly capable in some environments while struggling significantly in others.

Understanding executive functioning

Executive functioning refers to the cognitive processes that help us organise, plan, regulate, prioritise, transition between tasks and manage everyday demands.

Children and young people may experience difficulties with:

  • starting tasks

  • organisation and planning

  • working memory

  • managing time and routines

  • emotional regulation

  • flexible thinking

  • sustaining attention

  • shifting between activities

  • coping with unexpected changes

  • managing multiple demands at once

These difficulties are often misunderstood as laziness, avoidance or lack of motivation, when they may instead reflect genuine neurodevelopmental differences and nervous system overload.

How Occupational Therapy can help

Occupational Therapy can help families and schools better understand the factors affecting regulation, participation and everyday functioning.

Assessment and support may include:

  • understanding sensory processing and regulation needs

  • exploring executive functioning and participation difficulties

  • identifying environmental demands contributing to overwhelm

  • practical strategies for everyday routines and participation

  • emotional regulation support

  • sensory integration-informed assessment where appropriate

  • support with transitions, planning and organisation

  • environmental adaptations at home and school

  • collaborative work with schools and professionals

  • detailed formulation and recommendations for complex presentations

Our aim is not to make children “fit” environments that overwhelm them, but to support greater understanding, regulation, participation and wellbeing.

Assessment and support pathways

Some children benefit from focused assessment and practical recommendations, while others may require more comprehensive assessment to fully understand the interaction between sensory processing, executive functioning, emotional regulation and participation.

Depending on your child’s needs, support may include:

  • Standard Assessment

  • Enhanced Assessment

  • Comprehensive Assessment

  • School Observation & Professional Reports
