Standard Assessment

Our Standard Assessment is a focused Occupational Therapy assessment designed to explore the primary factors affecting your child or young person’s participation, regulation and everyday functioning.

This assessment pathway is most appropriate when concerns appear relatively clear or centred around one main area of difficulty, while still recognising the importance of understanding the child as a whole person within their everyday environments.

At Activate OT Scotland, all assessments begin with understanding how difficulties are affecting daily life, including participation at home, school, routines, relationships, independence and wellbeing.

Depending on your child’s needs, the assessment may explore areas such as:

  • sensory processing and regulation

  • motor coordination and motor planning

  • executive functioning and organisation

  • emotional regulation

  • participation in everyday activities

  • fatigue, overwhelm or functional challenges

Assessments are tailored to each child’s individual presentation and may include structured observation, play-based assessment, activity-based tasks, functional analysis, questionnaires and standardised assessment tools where appropriate.

The aim of a Standard Assessment is to provide a clearer understanding of the main factors contributing to difficulty, along with practical recommendations to support participation, regulation and everyday life.

This assessment pathway is often appropriate for:

  • more straightforward presentations

  • focused referral questions

  • isolated or primary areas of difficulty

  • children requiring practical recommendations and initial understanding

  • situations where one main system appears most affected

Some children may benefit from further assessment over time if difficulties appear more layered, inconsistent or complex than initially understood.
